Frequently asked questions
What is Omega 3 Pet and what does it contain?
It is a liquid complementary feed for dogs and cats: salmon oil and sunflower oil, with an antioxidant (tocopherol-rich extract of vegetable oils, 119 mg per litre). According to its product sheet, the oil provides at least 14 % omega 3 in total, with at least 3.5 % DHA, 2.5 % EPA and 1 % DPA. It is 100 % oil: no protein or fibre.
What is salmon oil for dogs and cats used for?
It is a source of omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), which in their diet come mainly from fish oils. It is added to food as a complement to their usual diet. It is not a medicine: if your dog or cat has skin or joint problems or any other symptom, your vet is the one to assess it.
How much should I give according to weight?
Per day (1 pump is about 2 ml): under 5 kg, 1 to 2 pumps (2-4 ml); 5 to 10 kg, 2 to 3 (4-6 ml); 10 to 20 kg, 3 to 5 (6-10 ml); 20 to 30 kg, 5 to 10 (10-20 ml); 30 to 40 kg, 10 to 15 (20-30 ml). For dogs over 40 kg the table gives no dose: ask your vet. Do not exceed the dose for your pet's weight.
How do I give it?
Shake the bottle before use and pump the doses onto its food, once a day. If your pet has never had it before, starting at the lower end of the range for its weight helps it get used to it.
Is it the same for dogs and cats?
Yes: it is the same oil for both and the dose goes by weight. An adult cat is usually in the under-5 kg band (1 to 2 pumps a day). Don't give your dog or cat an omega 3 intended for people: the dose and ingredients are for people.
Does it have contraindications or side effects?
At high doses, fish oils can cause soft stools or digestive upset, and can affect blood clotting. Ask your vet first if your dog or cat takes medication (especially anti-inflammatories or anticoagulants), is about to have surgery, has a diagnosed condition, is overweight, is a puppy or kitten, or is pregnant or nursing. It contains fish (salmon): if your pet has a diagnosed fish allergy, don't give it without asking first.
Can I give it together with another supplement?
If it already takes another product with fish oil (for example, a powdered supplement with sardine and mackerel oil), the amounts of omega 3 add up. Discuss it with your vet before combining them and take the composition on this page with you.
How do I choose a salmon oil for dogs?
Check that the label states how much omega 3 it contains (EPA and DHA as a percentage or in milligrams), what other oils it contains, whether it has an antioxidant and how it is dosed. This one declares at least 14 % omega 3, contains sunflower oil as well as salmon oil and is dosed in pumps according to weight.
How long does the bottle last?
It depends on weight. The 250 ml bottle lasts about 2 to 4 months for a cat or a dog under 5 kg, about 1.5 to 2 months between 5 and 10 kg, about 25 to 40 days between 10 and 20 kg, about 12 to 25 days between 20 and 30 kg and about 8 to 12 days between 30 and 40 kg. The 500 ml bottle lasts twice as long, provided it is finished within 6 months of opening. For a cat or a dog under 5 kg, the 250 ml bottle is the one that gets finished within those 6 months.
How should I store it?
In a cool, dry place away from direct light, with the bottle tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Once opened, best used within 6 months.
