Frequently asked questions
What is Longevia Perros and which dogs is it for?
It is a powdered complementary feed for adult and senior dogs. It combines, in a single serving, green-lipped mussel, sardine and mackerel oil (a source of EPA and DHA), glucosamine, chondroitin, hydrolysed collagen, astaxanthin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS, a type of fibre). It is not a medicine: if your dog is limping, is in pain or has a diagnosed condition, your vet is the one to assess it.
What does it contain and in what amount?
Per 6 g (the dose for a dog under 10 kg): 300 mg of green-lipped mussel, 300 mg of sardine and mackerel oil (with at least 18 % EPA and 12 % DHA, that is, at least 54 mg of EPA and 36 mg of DHA), 250 mg of glucosamine sulphate of plant origin, 250 mg of bovine chondroitin sulphate, 10 mg of porcine hydrolysed collagen and 2 mg of astaxanthin, plus fructooligosaccharides. With more weight, the dose goes up and the amounts go up in the same proportion. It also contains, as additives, taurine (250 mg), choline, vitamins C, E and B12, selenium (50 µg), turmeric extract (100 mg), chicken flavouring and Enterococcus faecium.
How much should I give according to weight?
Per day: under 10 kg, 6 g (about 10 ml of the scoop); 10 to 20 kg, 9 g (15 ml); 20 to 30 kg, 12 g (20 ml); over 30 kg, 15 g (25 ml). Stick to the dose for your dog's weight and don't increase it on your own.
How do I give it? And what if my dog won't eat it?
Once a day, mixed with its usual food, dry or wet, using the measuring scoop. It has chicken flavouring. If your dog is wary of new things, you can start with half a dose for the first few days and build up to the amount for its weight.
Why is maltodextrin listed first in the ingredients?
It is the powder carrier that allows dosing by weight and spreads the ingredients evenly. The main ingredients are present in the amounts declared on the label, which you'll find in the answer above.
Can I give it to my cat?
No. The formula and the dosing table are designed for dogs. For cats we have Longevia Gatos, with its own formula and a dose of 1 g a day. And in general, don't give your dog or cat supplements intended for people.
Does it contain allergens?
It contains fish (sardine and mackerel), mollusc (green-lipped mussel), ingredients of porcine (collagen) and bovine (chondroitin) origin, and chicken flavouring: if your dog is on an elimination diet or is allergic to chicken, ask your vet. The glucosamine is of plant origin. If your dog has a diagnosed allergy or intolerance, or a sensitive digestive history, ask your vet before starting.
Can I give it together with another supplement or with its medication?
Ask your vet first. If it already takes another product with glucosamine, chondroitin, fish oil or turmeric (for example, a salmon oil), those amounts add up, and fish oils can affect blood clotting: this matters if it takes anti-inflammatories or anticoagulants, or is about to have surgery. Take the composition on this page to your vet so they can see it.
When should I check with the vet before starting?
If your dog is a puppy, is pregnant or nursing, is on any treatment, has a diagnosed condition (for example, diabetes, or a liver or kidney problem) or is about to have surgery. It is a complementary feed: it does not replace a balanced diet or your vet's judgement.
How long does the tub last and how much does it cost per day?
The tub holds 180 g: about 30 days for a dog under 10 kg, 20 days for 10 to 20 kg, 15 days for 20 to 30 kg and 12 days over 30 kg. For a 15 kg dog it works out at 0.80 € a day.
How should I store it?
In a cool, dry place away from direct light, with the tub tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Once opened, best used within 6 months.
