What is Ovomet® with hyaluronic acid for?

It's the most frequently asked question, and the honest answer is this: neither eggshell membrane nor hyaluronic acid has any authorised health claim in the European Union, so we can't tell you what they are for, and neither can any other brand. What we do give you is the facts: what it contains, how much per capsule and how much it costs per day. Contains egg.

What is Ovomet® and what is hyaluronic acid?

Ovomet® is a hydrolysed eggshell membrane: the thin film between the shell and the egg white, broken down into smaller fragments. It is an ingredient of Spanish origin. The hyaluronic acid is added separately, as 90 % sodium hyaluronate. It is not a powder: everything comes in a capsule, with nothing to measure or dissolve.

How much does each capsule contain? Is that a lot?

Each capsule, which is the daily serving, contains 300 mg of Ovomet® (hydrolysed eggshell membrane) and 100 mg of 90 % sodium hyaluronate, that is, 90 mg of hyaluronic acid. The 300 mg of hydrolysed eggshell membrane is below the 500 mg a day that the EU sets as the maximum for hydrolysed eggshell membrane in supplements for adults. For hyaluronic acid there is no reference value or maximum level set by EFSA. It also contains magnesium stearate as an anti-caking agent, and the capsule is made of gelatine.

How and when should I take it?

1 capsule a day with a glass of water. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

Can I take it with other supplements or with medication?

Check whether your other supplement also contains eggshell membrane, which is common in collagen formulas: the EU sets a maximum of 500 mg a day of hydrolysed eggshell membrane for adults, and with this one and another of 300 mg you would already reach 600 mg. In that case, or if you take another supplement with hyaluronic acid, ask your doctor or pharmacist first. If you take any medication, also ask before you start.

Who should not take it or should check first?

It is not suitable for people allergic to egg, under-18s, pregnant women or breastfeeding women. If you take medication, have any condition or are about to have surgery, ask your doctor or pharmacist first. The composition per capsule is on this same page: show it to them.

Does it contain egg? Is it suitable for vegetarians? Does it contain gluten?

Yes, it contains egg: eggshell membrane is an egg derivative, so it is not suitable if you have an egg allergy or intolerance. The capsule is made of gelatine (animal origin), so it is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. The product page declares it gluten-free.

Are there studies on this product?

On this specific product, no. The published human trials with eggshell membrane used other ingredients and other amounts, and with Ovomet® we have only found one study, in animals. With orally taken hyaluronic acid there are few trials, they are small and their results are mixed. That's why we don't promise you any effect: we tell you how much it contains.

How is it different from other eggshell membrane formulas?
